DEF is required by over the road vehicles with a “SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION” (SCR) device to reduce NOx
.
NOx reduction applies to 2010 MODEL YEAR AND NEWER.
All of the major engine manufacturers are using SCR method. (requires DEF)
DEF contains 33% UREA / 66% De-ionized Water.
DEF begins to crystallize at -5 deg C and becomes solid at -12 deg C.
DEF will not degrade through freeze/thaw cycles.
Highway trucks will have a reservoir to hold 60-75 litres of DEF.
This capacity should last roughly for 3 fills of fuel.
Highway trucks consume DEF at a rate of 2% of the consumption of fuel.
Trucks will be rigged to only achieve 20 kmph when DEF is empty.
Packaged DEF and bulk is available now.
DEF is manufactured to ISO and API standards of purity.
DEF is shown as NON TOXIC on MSDS sheets.
Enforcement of handling practices is unknown at this time.
DEF is NOT compatible with mild steel and is NOT recommended with aluminum (DEF is somewhat corrosive). STAINLESS STEEL IS THE BEST OPTION
DEF is compatible with many plastic materials.
